Sophiya University

Sophia University was based by Jesuits in 1913. It opened with departments of German Literature, Philosophy and Commerce, headed by its founder Armin Hoffmann (1864–1937) as its initial official president.

In 1932, atiny low cluster of Sophia students refused to salute the war dead at Yasukuni Shrine within the presence of a Japanese attache, speech it profaned their spiritual beliefs. The attache was withdrawn from Sophia as a results of this incident, damaging the university's name. The bishop of Yeddo intervened within the standoff by allowing Catholic students to salute the war dead, once that several Sophia students, yet as Armin Hoffmann himself, participated in rites at Yasukuni. The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples later issued the Pluries Instanterque in 1936, that inspired Catholics to attend Shinto shrines as a loyal gesture; the Vatican Palace re-issued this document once the war in 1951.

Sophia University continued  to grow by increasing the numbers of departments, school members and students, additionally to advancing its international focus by establishing associate degree exchange program. several of its students studied at Georgetown University within the u.  s. as early as 1935. Sophia's college was established in 1973, followed by the gap of Sophia junior college in 1976. With the innovation of the college of humanistic discipline in 2006, Sophia University presently holds twenty seven departments in its eight schools. Its current president is Yoshiaki Ishizawa. Toshiaki Koso is head of its board of administrators. Since 2008, the world Leadership Program was started for college kids from four Jesuit universities in East Asia: Ateneo American state Manila University within the Philippines, Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, Sogang University in Republic of Korea, and Sophia University in Japan.
